Retiring from the military is such a significant closing of a chapter, both for the service member and their entire family. Being a military spouse, I could understand the gravity and joy of what this means for each of them. Documenting these moments was such an honor and privilege. Congratulations Commander Conner and family!🚁🇺🇸🌊❤️🤍💙

I remember two years ago when I started my first 365 photo project, I was very often discouraged for two reasons. 

First, our house we rent is one color: gray gray gray. Don’t get me wrong. I am so very very thankful that we have a house that is a meeting our needs and allows us to be in this area. But I would live outside in the sunshine if I could. My artist eye thrives in light, bright, warm spaces. This house has pushed me to hone all my technical skills when I take a photo and the process, let me tell you, has been painful. 

Secondly, I began to get frustrated with how very repetitive our daily lives are. How many photos of my boys cleaning the kitchen or playing games would I take? I wondered with such a backdrop and so many ordinary tasks if I would be able to take pictures that really mattered to future me and my family. The photos I was taking wasn’t what I imagined when I started the 365 project. We don’t do many exciting things as it turns out. 😆

Which brings me to my point. I don’t bring these things up to complain. My heart has grown to enjoy this house and its dramatic shadows and the comfort of the motions of our day. 
I say this, because looking back on those photos from just two years ago is ALREADY a treasure trove of memories I don’t know I would miss. And truly, I don’t notice the house or even the mundane activites. I notice the faces and expressions. I notice how they’ve all grown so stinking much. Again and again, the small details in a photo unlock a myriad of memory. 

With this year’s 365 project, I am a little older and wiser. When I look at this photo that I took today (a moment looks like so very ordinary and mundane) I realize one year very soon getting all three boys together to play video games will be a feat. These guys will have job schedules and college. We will probably be in another house (perhaps one I can paint), and we’ll miss this place. 

So if you ever feel like your home isn’t pretty enough or your days are beyond ordinary, I challenge you to take a photo as exactly as it is anyway. Or better yet, invite this artist and mom to do it for you. You will never regret it. Send me a message. I’d be delighted.

Oooh it’s hard to choose a top 9 favorite images of 2023. There’s more faves in my stories today, but these all make my heart so full as both an artist and a parent.

My final session of 2023 was a true joy from start to finish. For one hour, I had the honor of documenting this rare gathering of extended family from across the world. I am always blown away by how beautiful the love of family is.

And now with these photos, my client and her family can relive these memories and cherish them for a lifetime. 💖📷

Don't you just love how there is never a dull moment in the life of a two year old boy?  In the course of an hour he has discovered something new, possibly destroyed something, given out a hug, definitely helped himself to your drink, and never stopped moving.

It would have been so easy to miss this moment. Amidst the hubbub surrounding her, this enthusiastic and energetic young lady took a few seconds to be completely still. 

Because I spent the evening capturing her and her friends endlessly moving between the amusement rides, I found the contrast of this particular shot very moving. I see a young girl at peace, surrounded by her tribe. She looks strong and happy and so ready face the next adventure that awaits her.

CHRISTMAS MINI'S AT HOME, CARMEN'S STORY:
 "If your husband is anything like mine, he rolls his eyes anytime I mention family photos. Caroline solved that for us with her fun front porch mini sessions!

There was ZERO prep work! She showed up to capture us during our 'everyday' chaos of fall cheerleading and watching the Astros in the world series; Of course I threw on some lipstick, but other than that--IT WAS LITERALLY STRESS FREE!

She was in and out within 15 minutes and my husband actually said, 'Wow, that was easy! I'd do that again if it was that quick every time!' 

And when I say 'quick,' I don't mean it lacked thought or care or insight--because the return product was absolutely gorgeous! We got so many candid and posed images that we are still treasuring!! There is no "half-*ssing" (excuse my French!) as some photographers usually rush you through. She is purely intentional and brilliant!

I just ordered this guy's school pictures. For each year he grows, I have a small token of that cheesy grin on a dapperly dressed version of himself. 

The rest of those 364 days, this is my boy--well worn t-shirt, baseball hat, kitty at his side. Real life moments like this steal my breath away. Time will soon replace this cool kid with a cool teen. And so, I will keep taking photos like these to hang on the wall beside the school portraits. My momma heart wants to remember every version of this boy.

Every year around September, I feel this intense need to create art.  Maybe it's a nesting thing as the seasons change, but I am so restless until my artistic vision is completed. 

My youngest son also bears this artist's heart.  Together, we wander through stores selling fall décor to gather inspiration.  After stopping at the art store , we are buzzing to sit down and dig into brining our ideas to life.  Often we fail miserably in getting what is in our minds into the physical world of canvas, ceramic, or wood.  But it doesn't matter.  I love every minute of it, and so does he. 

Exactly a year ago, I captured such a moment of this creative process. I wanted Mom (me) to be in more photos of these seemingly ordinary moments. I'm so glad I made the effort. I look at this picture and see a core memory for both of us.  It's an image I'll treasure and a tradition I hope continues every year.

Back to school time soon. Funny enough, the biggest thing I struggle with isn't the early mornings or the frenzied rush out the door. It's how much time I spend in the car. It's easily bordering on 2 hours a day in the drop off and pickup lines.

However, that is excellent audio book time. 

Currently, I'm listening to Building Your Story Brand by Donald Miller.  After turning the car off, I am so ready to rush to my computer and implement what I am learning. If you find the psychology of marketing fascinating, you'll enjoy it as I do. 

I just finished The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday. That book left me feeling unstoppable.  I'm sharing it with my teens who are learning how to view challenges. 

Okay. It's all coming back to me. I'm remembering how much I love audio book time.  I think I'll be just fine as I creep along down the pick-up line.

I'll go first.  After the occasional wrestling session, those last 15 minutes before bed is set aside for reading. Sometimes together, sometimes solo.  It helps their brains unwind from the day.
